Skyline
Port of Miami run
Cruise ships, downtown, and the bay from a small private boat instead of a packed deck.
From the water
Private mornings on Biscayne Bay with Captain Avant. Skyline, sandbar, and the flats—just your group of four.
Mr. and Mrs. Steere come to Miami each year for their wedding anniversary, celebrating 38 years this June. They have done and seen many things in Miami on these trips, but one thing they knew they had not done is see Miami from the water on a private boat tour designed just for them.
They called me and we discussed their interests and what they wished to see and do. After that planning, they booked a three-hour tour for a Sunday.
They came on board my new 22-6 Robalo Cayman at Crandon Park Marina, bringing along a cooler of sandwiches and refreshments. The sun was out, the water blue, and a gentle 12-mile-per-hour breeze wrapped around us.
We headed south along the western shore of Key Biscayne, passing the site where President Richard Nixon had his Florida White House—the helicopter pad built for his use is still in place today. Stiltsville, still standing off the Key’s southern tip, was something we viewed from afar before slowly motoring over shallow water to spot mudding stingrays and sharks going about their business.
We turned north toward downtown and the famous Miami River. Mrs. Steere remarked as we approached that it felt as if “the city rises from the water.” We motored about half a mile upstream into the skyscraper canyon, turned around, and set our course for the historic Venetian Islands, passing Monument Island and cruising near the Port of Miami and Miami Marine Stadium.
My party had a memorable time marking a memorable anniversary. When they left, they headed off to the Rusty Pelican restaurant to cap off the day. It was an absolute pleasure to be their captain!
Most trips mix a little of everything. These are the stops that keep showing up.
Skyline
Cruise ships, downtown, and the bay from a small private boat instead of a packed deck.
Sandbar
Swim, sit in clear water, and take photos. A favorite add-on after a skyline loop.
Wildlife
Starfish, stingrays, and birds on skinny water. This is why a small boat beats a mega-tour.
River
Motor into the skyscraper canyon for a unique perspective of downtown Miami from the water.
